Pots of talent at local pottery
-- posted November 2007

hippo bank Based at their picturesque farm studio in Cotes, near Barrow-on-Soar, potters Dan Moor and Sean Keefe have been creating character pottery for over 30 years. Each piece produced is hand-made, unique and stamped with a maker's mark and date. Originally making the classic English Toby Jug, over the years the range has extended to encompass a wide range of animal collectables, piggy banks, flying ducks and fantastic dragon sculptures. With the introduction of the website www.muggins.com some four years ago, sales to overseas buyers have increased dramatically although there have been some disappointment when it is pointed out that dragons do not take kindly to shipping!

piggy bank A recent innovation and one that has become increasingly popular is the creation of "named" animal banks. A unique gift - with three weeks notice, the pottery can provide you with a unique animal savings bank (you select which animal from the range available) with the name or words of your choice - a great way to encourage your children or grandchildren to save those pennies.

dog bank Since the launch of Muggins on the worldwide web, approaches have been made for large orders from several well-known companies. However, this has presented problems because the pottery is small and prides itself on mugginspottery its individuality - you will never see two identical Muggins products. This exclusivity may in the future mean that your Muggins pottery may well become a sought-after collector's item!

Muggins sells their pottery at established craft fairs across the UK, and orders can also be placed through their website. You can also buy from the pottery in Cotes, but only by prior appointment. In a world that is becoming increasingly globalised and bland, the creativity and individuality of Muggins still shines!
