Great news – the nomination for a Green Plaque Award for The Pound has been shortlisted. Voting for the six finalists begins on Monday 13th September and closes on Sunday 24th October. You don’t have to be a Countesthorpe resident, or even live in Leicestershire, to vote, so please ask your family, friends and work colleagues to VOTE FOR THE POUND.

For those who don’t know - the area, known locally as ‘The Pound’, is where the St Andrew’s Church wall meets The Cornerstones. Historically it was a place where stray pets or farm animals, which had strayed onto other people’s property, were kept at the owner’s expense until they were able to pay to have their animals returned. There is currently no street name or sign to indicate this, and over time the historical significance of this area will be lost. However, if we are successful then this historic knowledge will be preserved for generations to come.

The Leicestershire County Council Green Plaques are awarded to people and places in and around the county, nominated and voted for by you

Councillor David Jennings, who sadly passed away in August 2019, frequently reminded the Parish Council and residents of the history of The Pound. It would be lovely for this reference to continue.
